Description

The AJ Aviator is a  wonderfully warm and cosy hat perfect for anyone who enjoys the outdoors.

This pattern includes the following sizes: Newborn–3m, 3-6m, 6-12m, age 1-2, age 2-4, age 4-7, age 7-12, Small Adult, Medium Adult, Large Adult and XL Adult. An overlocker can be used for most steps, but a regular sewing machine is all that is needed. It is suitable for enthusiastic beginners.

This pattern is named after the inspirational aviator, Amy Johnson. She was born in Yorkshire and was the first woman to fly solo from Britain to Australia. I consider both Yorkshire and Australia to be my home, and my maiden name was Johnson so I feel quite a connection with Amy.

I was terrified of sewing a hat until I suddenly had to do it in a couple of hours for a photoshoot the next day. All my fears disappeared as soon as I started the AJ Aviator as the instructions are all super clear and it turned out fantastic! The construction is not nearly as complicated as I imagined and it took me about 2 hours tops. It’s gonna fit for next winter as well, I love it!

This hat is so easy to sew and it looks amazing! I had some scraps from a coat and over trousers and now my little has a complete set to wear out!
The hat is so cozy too if lined with fleece! Can’t wait to sew up a few more! 🤩🤩🤩

  3. Kelli Riemer

Fabulous pattern! Perfect fit. My boys love their hats, thank you!!

I’m going to Scandinavia soon and wanted a black hat to keep warm.
This is an amazing pattern. I used cotton duck canvas for the outer and polyester sherpa fleece for the inner.
It was easy to construct due to the excellent pattern and thorough intructions. I used a walking foot due to the thickness and bulky seems and it sewed together beautifully. I’m going to make a few more 😊

I moved last year from the Middle East where I was used to temperatures +40 to Canada where our winter was -40, I made the AJ aviators and lined them with fleece and they were great., it was a nice easy to follow pattern and a joy to see the kids wearing them to school.

This was so much fun to sew! I made one for the whole family using scraps I’d been hording for years.

What a fabulous pattern. So professional looking and with such clear instructions, I whipped this up in no time.

This is a fantastic pattern! Really fun, quick and easy. I’m an experienced beginner and had never made a hat before, and the instructions were super clear. I made a 3-6 month hat for my nephew, and when it was done I liked it so much I went straight out to buy more fabric and now have one that fits me as well! It’s very cosy 🙂 There’s a good chance my entire family will be getting these next festive season…

The only adjustments I would make are to the straps; I found it helpful to make them a little longer, and for the adult size I would be inclined to place them a little bit further back, so the hat can be worn (fashionably) higher on the forehead without the straps coming too far forward. I used snaps instead of velcro and it worked great!
